Reset Your Life Series | An Introduction

In the spring of 2018, I set out to make major changes in my life. At this point in my life, I felt very stressed, anxious and working at a job that didn't align with my passions - podcasting and content creation. I knew that something needed to change, but I was struggling with how to translate a vague pipe dream into something that was tangible. I needed to change, but wasn’t sure how. I needed to reset my life.

After traveling back home to Dallas, I took a few days to really think and ask myself some hard hitting questions that I had avoided for a while.

Why do I want to do podcasting (and what will it even look like)? How can I gain control of my spending habits so that I can travel, become debt free, and become financially stable? Where do I actually want to be in five years?

I knew that the answers to those questions didn't align with what my current actions were.

A few weeks ago, my dad asked me if I would rather have a job that isn’t necessarily glamourous, but would pay the bills, or my dream job that hardly pays anything. At the time, I instinctively picked the second option. I’d rather do what I love then work somewhere that makes me miserable.

However, why can’t you have your cake and eat it too? Who says I can’t work hard for a few years to build something - to actually build out this blog and the content I so desperately want to create - while doing a few jobs that pay the bills in the process.

Inspired by this conversation and my general desire to succeed, I set out to create a five year strategic plan. An actual strategic plan, with goals, metrics, and a defined timeframe that I could hold myself accountable to.

What initially started out as a basic visioning exercise, quickly turned into a month-long intense period of introspection and analysis.

I wanted to share how I’ve approached goal-setting and how I’m working over the next five years to make changes in my life to emerge on the other side as the person I want to become. It’s not going to be easy, and it’s not going to happen overnight.

Social media gives us the appearance that things just happen for a lot of people, but I’m here to help show that anyone can do what they want - within reason.  As long as you’re willing to answer some hard questions, dedicate some time on personal development, and start holding yourself accountable, resetting your life is possible.

Through my research into the psychology of habits and personal development, I found that change takes five steps, and some guiding questions to help you get started:

  1. Identify | What do you want to change in your life?

  2. Reflect | Why do you want to change?

  3. Analyze | How are you going to change?

  4. Quantify | What actions are you going to take in your life?

  5. Implement | How are you going to ensure success?

Each week, I'll walk through each step on the blog and my YouTube channel. These videos and posts are supposed to help you think through how you're going to change, and translating those thoughts into actionable items to reset your life.

I'll also have short, two-page worksheets at the end of every post to help you start to write (or type!) out how you're going to change. My goal here is to help you think out each of these steps, and since everyone learns a bit differently, I want to provide different ways to talk about the same thing.

You'll also want to make sure you're subscribed to my email list! I promise I won't spam you. As we go along this series, I'll also share a weekly newsletter that serves as a recap.

I'm so excited to start this journey with you guys! We're in for a great few weeks.
